As you might be able to tell from the banner at the top of the page, Career Opportunities now has its own Job Listings, in association with Jobamatic.com.
I have been looking for a way to offer quality job opportunities for a while and Jobamatic, in coordination with Feedburner, finally provided me an easy-to-use answer.
Even better, if you have jobs to offer, you can now list your jobs directly with Career Opportunities and they will be seen by hundreds of interested people, every day.
Here we are in the traditional middle of summer, but I am sure you have already started to see the "Back to School" signs in the stores. It might seem early to be thinking of school, but the coming Fall is the time for considering all the things we have learned and all the things we have yet to learn, regardless of our age. Technology has become an important part of our learning, both in facilitating learning and learning how to use the technology itself. We would all do well to take a few moments to think about the technology around us, and how it helps or hinders us in our daily lives.

Burt Lo was a presenter at BarCampLA on Saturday with a topic of "What I learned as an IT manager." I enjoyed his talk and recorded it, as well. I should have it up in the Career Opportunities feed today.
Update: Audio for Burton's presentation is now available.

My wife, Rosanne, recently returned to teaching, working as an undergraduate history professor at a local CSU campus. Watching her grade mid-term tests combined with my recent thoughts on office performance reviews lead to a bit of an epiphany. Instead of managers and workers relying on their (often faulty) memories for performance review topics, why shouldn't each side of that relationship keep a grade book, like any good teacher, so that you have hard evidence of past successes and challenges? This one step could help to remove the sometimes adversarial nature of reviews and give both managers and workers a clear view of their productivity.

Wandering through “The Grove”, a new shopping mall in Los Angeles, I was struck of some similarities between retail sales and your high-tech career. Long gone are the days of the “do everything” department store, hardware store, grocery store. Today, we have reached the logical, if not somewhat absurd, pinnacle of shopping…not just the niche market, but the ultra-niche market.

How are you treating those around you? How do you treat your customers? Are you letting your day-to-day interactions with them cloud your judgment and effect your behavior? This is one of the most insidious problems you can experience as you build your career and yet it is something we experience every day in our work and in our lives. Despite our best efforts, if you deal with certain problems frequently enough, you can forget that people are still individuals and should be treated as such.

When talking with Career Opportunities readers and listeners, I regularly hear stories of how a particular company does, or does not, provide the basic necessities for success. Some workers are left without an office or even a cubicle to call their own. Companies refuse to buy needed hardware or software and yet workers are still required to hold the infrastructure of the company together or risk bad performance reviews or worse. Training is poor, erratic or non-existent. The fact is, each of these issues, and countless others, clearly indicates how much your company and your management respects and values your work. Lack of respect for your work isn't just business as usual, it is a fundamental flaw that effects everything you do.

In the typical corporation, you will find many people whose main role is that of "The Enforcer." Project managers who enforce project timelines, human resource staffers who enforce work policies, union representatives who enforce labor agreements and even IT workers who enforce company standards, approved hardware, software and password policies. While, in most cases, all of these items need policing and enforcing, playing the role of the enforcer could be damaging to your career as a whole.
